Q:do i have to buy the netgear ac1200 wi-fi usb and if so what does it do ?
A:First, a brief lesson on the Netgear AC1750 Wi-Fi docsis 3.0 - this item combines your Internet providers cable modem and your internal Wi-Fi router into 1 piece of equipment instead of having 2 sitting on your desktop; however, the more important feature of this item is that you won't need your cable providers cable … see more First, a brief lesson on the Netgear AC1750 Wi-Fi docsis 3.0 - this item combines your Internet providers cable modem and your internal Wi-Fi router into 1 piece of equipment instead of having 2 sitting on your desktop; however, the more important feature of this item is that you won't need your cable providers cable modem (which I pay $7 per month to rent - there are some pros and cons to this because if it breaks you are on your own if you own the equipment, if you rent it for $7 per month the cable company will replace it for free). Now the other feature of the Netgear Ac1750 Wi-Fi docsis 3.0, which is now getting into more of the question you asked, is that it provides Wi-Fi (wireless network/internet access) to your house. In order to be able to use the Wi-Fi feature, you must have something on the PC/TV/Roku/Amazon Fire Stick/etc. that can talk back to the netgear ac1750, that something (sometimes called an adapter) is what you are asking about. So now let me explain something about Wi-Fi before I answer your question. Wi-Fi has different levels of speed/fastness/throughput they are categorized by letters b/g/n/ac. For simplicity sake, b and g are the slowest, n and ac are the fastest. This router provides 2 access points, the first one for b/g/n and the second one for n/ac. Most laptops/pc/tvs/etc can access the routers b/g/n access point because this technology has been around for a long time and is already built into those devices; however in order to take advantage of this routers fastest and latest and greatest technology (ac), you would have to have the ac technology built into your pc or use the Netgear ac1200 Wi-Fi usb (the item you are asking about). So to answer your question, you do not have to buy the netgear ac1200 to use the router (because you can still use the b/g/n or n/ac Wi-Fi access points for your older equipment). I just bought a new laptop and it had the ac technology already built into it. If you are connecting your pc/equipment hardwired to the netgear ac1750 Wi-Fi docsis 3.0, you won't need anything except the network cable to attach it (the Wi-Fi speed would not apply because it is hardwired, hardwired is always the fastest way to go). see less

Q:Can the firmware be updated by the user or only by the isp

This is unfortunate, as the current firmware (at least for Time Warner Cable) relies on outdated code that prevents the Netgear CM500 from obtaining the accurate System Time. This can lead to more dropped connections and difficulty when accessing secure sites… see more Netgear confirms that only your ISP can update the firmware. This is unfortunate, as the current firmware (at least for Time Warner Cable) relies on outdated code that prevents the Netgear CM500 from obtaining the accurate System Time. A router is a device to make your own local network which can be wired or wireless and is downstream of the modem. Some manufacturers such as NetGear has combined the hardware of a modem and a router into one unit to simplify a setup that is appealing to many people. The reason I recommended that these units remain separate was several, but biggest is if I want to upgrade my router/wifi then I can do it without replacing the modem. Reliability may also be a factor. see less

My internet is faster and my internet TV works better than TWC cheap dual modem/router, and I'm saving $6 month by not leasing their modem. As for phone, what I did was buy MagicJackgo for $39 (which included a phone charger as added value), used my same landline, ported my same number, and hooked it up to a router which is connected to my modem. Took about 10 minutes. The current deal is the first 12 months are free and then after that it's $35 a year, yes year, not month. But they have a holiday special right now for $110 for 5 years of service plus the one year free service. That said, I'm getting 6 years of phone service, local and LD, VM, Call forwarding, etc, for $110 for six years which comes out to $1.50 a month for phone service. Plus they threw in a second charger. Compare that to your current phone bill. I believe you can also hook it up to your cell phone (if you don't have a landline AND have your landline calls forwarded to your cell phone if you're out. It's so worth the savings. My landline phone bills with TW were $10 per month plus taxes so right there it's about $140 a year with taxes and all those unknown little surcharges, over 6 years it cost near $840 for a landline I rarely use but kept for faxing. With magic jack, I'm spending $110 over 6 years vs. $840. With MJ you also own the equipment and can take it anywhere you go, like a hotel, or anywhere there's access to internet and an ac outlet. So not having the phone connection to Netgear turned out alright. The only regret I have is that I didn't do all this sooner because I was chicken to try new things. And now that I have netgear and my new router (buy them separately - these combo modem and routers are not nearly as fast), I've reduced my overall expenses by about $1200 per year, I have internet TV with HULU, Amazon Prime (have to be a member $99 yr) and worth every cent, Netflix and all the shows and stations I had on TW. Goodbye to cable and dealing with their snarky CS folks and outrageous pricing. Though you do need to keep internet for all these things but if you have other options for providers and are not happy like most with TWC, check it out. Good luck. PS: BTW, I have a wireless printer/fax/scanner. Everything still works fine except fax, which doesn't work with Magic Jack but my IT guy tells me if I buy a second MJ I can hook that up separately to the printer or just use eFax.com, pay as you go. Or just email an attachment. There's all sorts of ways around that and who faxes much anymore anyway? see less
